Thandiwe Newton REFUSES she was released from Magic Mike 3 due to bust-up with Channing Tatum

Thandiwe Newton has denied allegations that she was fired from her lead role in the new Magic Mike 3 movie due to a heated argument with co-star Channing Tatum.

The 49-year-old actress has left Magic Mike’s Last Dance after 11 days of filming with Channing, 41, due to a ‘family affair’, and she will reportedly be replaced in the role of Salma Hayek, 55, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The Sun reports that the alleged altercation between the actors, who are said to be ‘unbelievably vicious’, was over the fact that Will Smith beat Chris Rock at the Oscars.

A spokesman for Warner Bros. Pictures said: ‘Thandiwe Newton has made the difficult decision to step down from the production of Warner Bros. Pictures ‘Magic Mike’s Last Dance To Take Care Of Family Matters.’

The statement comes after insiders told The Sun that Thandiwe plans to sue studio directors at Warner Bros. for the incident.

The altercation allegedly took place at the scene in Paddington, London, culminating in Channing driving off in her car.

A source said: ‘Channing Tatum is producer and number one on the set. Thandiwe Newton is star number two. But 11 days into the filming, and it’s all over.

‘They fell beyond the debacle at the Oscars. I was on the set. I looked at her and looked at him. They were in and out of the house where we were filming with this confrontation.

‘After the brawl he just said,’ I’m not working with her anymore ‘. When he’s a producer, it’s his movie, so she’s away from the movie. ‘

The source added that all scenes filmed with Thandiwe should now be resumed with Salma, while the film’s director Steven Soderbergh reportedly did not take a side in the argument.

A spokesman for Thandiwe told MailOnline: ‘This report is completely inaccurate.’

The actress was previously credited as Thandie Newton before returning to the original spelling of her name three decades after it was misspelled in her first film.

She revealed that Thandie was a careless spelling mistake in the credits of her first film – the 1991 Australian film Flirting, starring Nicole Kidman and Noah Taylor – and it has stuck ever since.

‘That is my name. It’s always been my name. I’m taking back what’s mine, she told British Vogue in April 2021.

The original Magic Mike movie premiered in 2012 and was loosely based on Channing’s experience working as a stripper in Tampa, Florida.

The film starred Channing, Alex Pettyfer, Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello and Matthew McConaughey and was about Adam, a 19-year-old who was suddenly immersed in a world of male stripping.

Magic Mike’s sequel, titled Magic Mike XXL, was directed by Gregory Jacobs and released in 2015.

Channing confirmed he would repeat his role in Magic Mike’s Last Dance in November 2021.

In a recent interview with PEOPLE, he expressed that he wants the film to be like ‘the strip’s Super Bowl’.

‘I want to dance like we’ve never been able to do in the other two movies because we have to be honest about what the reality of that world is, which is not great dancing.’

He also talked about the importance of the film having a female main character.

“I want an equal, if not even more centralized female character that Mike can really play out of and almost … I would not say [to have her] take the baton, but really let the film be about a woman’s experience and not Mike’s experience, because it’s been so much about Mike and the guys’ experiences.

‘These films are very, very woman-forward. At least that is our intention. ‘

The film premieres exclusively on HBO Max. The release date has not yet been announced.
