Skull Session: Dwayne Haskins Was Like a Brother to Buckeye Quarterbacks, Ohio State Linebackers Shine in NFL, and TBDBITL Reveals Halftime Show

It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood.

Word of the day: Cudgel.

OLDER BROTHER. Justin Fields did not really have a relationship with Dwayne Haskins before he came to Ohio State. And since Haskins traveled to the NFL, it would have made perfect sense if they never developed that relationship.

But that’s not what happened. Haskins accepted the heir to his throne with open arms and became like a big brother to him.

It’s yours now, Fields remembers Haskins telling him.

What Haskins meant that April day was really that the shot to lead a full Ohio State list into 2019 was there for Fields. What none of the guys might have recognized at the time was that Haskins handed him an inheritance.

“I do not want to lie, he kind of started something,” Fields said as he drove home from the Bears’ offseason program on Tuesday. “You could say he did. We never know if I was taken to Ohio State if he was not there, but you can give him the credit for starting something. I thought about it the other day and I saw something online – before him there really was no elite passer in Ohio State for years before.

“I think he started that elite care group with, of course, him, me and now CJ [Stroud]. ”

Although Haskins had already signed up for the draft, he hosted Fields’ weekend on campus, introduced him to his girlfriend, took him to a basketball game with former coach Urban Meyer, and showed him around a campus he never got to see as a preparatory recruit.

“If I have to be honest with you before that, we talked a little bit, but we did not talk very much,” Fields said. β€œIt seemed like when I was there, we had known each other our whole lives. He was so cool, so accommodating. I think that was where our relationship became a more personal relationship where we got to know each other more. And he became like a big brother to me. ”

Haskins was absolutely AND in transforming Ohio State into arguably the modern QBU. And he was more than happy to lead that group, even after his time in Columbus was over.

BIGGER BROTHER. Justin Fields was not the only Buckeye quarterback to follow in Dwayne Haskins’ footsteps or call him big brother.

Haskins also played that role for CJ Stroud.

CJ Stroud called him a big brother.

After taking over as Ohio State’s starting quarterback last fall, Stroud found an encouraging mentor in Dwayne Haskins Jr.

It was only three years earlier that Haskins had made a similar starting debut with the Buckeyes, where he stepped into the high-profile position and faced all the demands placed on the passing players.

Therefore, he had plenty of advice to give Stroud over phone calls and text messages.

“It meant a lot to CJ and to me,” said his mother, Kim, “that he was already in his NFL career, and he would reach back and give back and talk to CJ and make sure he gave him some of that wisdom. ”

Stroud also loved his friendship with Haskins because Stroud, even while attending high school, had looked up to his late predecessor.

In fact, Haskins was one of the reasons he was drawn to Ohio State despite growing up more than 2,000 miles away in Southern California’s Inland Empire.

That says a lot about Haskins’ character, as several guys who did not come to Ohio State before he left both call him “big brother.”

This also gives us a little look at what it means to be a starting quarterback in Ohio State – it’s special, and there are only a few guys on the planet who can truly understand and have empathy. And those guys stick together.

WHAT ABOUT THESE BUCKEYE LINEBACKERS? So as it turns out, Ohio State’s group of linebackers in 2020 was pretty good.

It is worth noting that Pete Werner also had highest run-defense grade of any rookie since 2014, and was it best player in the league against the bud this season.

It’s a little wild how it was this tale in 2019 and 2020 that the veteran linebackers were not so good and just held back some of the younger guys from getting a chance to shine.

Meanwhile, these guys are playing in the NFL, while Ohio State has just had two linebacker transfers mid-season after being knocked out by a running back.

ADVISE ME … Folks, it looks like Saturday’s break show is going to rock completely.

Because I like fun, I will not ruin this riddle for you. But if you’re confused, I’m sure you can get some help in the comments (or in the replies to the tweet).
