‘Secrets of Dumbledore’ minimizes Tina Goldstein as a glorified Cameo

  • Warning: There are spoilers ahead for “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore.”
  • The third prequel film greatly reduces Katherine Waterston’s role as Tina Goldstein.
  • The reason for Tina’s absence is lame. This may be because the actress publicly opposed JK Rowling’s views.

“Fantastic Beasts” fans may be surprised that a main character has been reduced to nothing more than a glorified cameo in the franchise’s third film.

If you were hoping to see more of Tina Goldstein (Katherine Waterston) in “The Secrets of Dumbledore,” you’re probably disappointed.

Newt Scamander’s (Eddie Redmayne) love interest, and the other lead role in the franchise until this point, Goldstein sits on the sidelines for the majority of the new sequel.

Goldstein’s absence is all the more frustrating because there’s a rather lame, unconvincing excuse for her minimal screen time.

How Tina’s absence in ‘The Secrets of Dumbledore’ is explained: She got a fancy job promotion

Amazing beasts and where to find them

In the first “Fantastic Beasts” movie, Tina was an ex-Auror who would be one again.

When the non-magical human Jacob (a very humorous Dan Fogler) asks Newt about the film’s massive elephant-in-space early in the film with a simple “What about Tina?”, Newt gives a simple explanation.

“Tina is not available,” Newt replies matter-of-factly.

He then clarifies that Tina has been appointed head of the Aurors at MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America), as if to immediately explain any confusion.

It’s not clear why that would necessarily keep Tina completely out of the loop. If anything, you would think that it might encourage Tina to be more invested than ever in trying to join Newt, Jacob and the rest of the crew on their journey to try to stop Gellert Grindelwald (Mads Mikkelsen) in the third film.

An Auror is a law enforcer. If Grindelwald puts the entire wizarding community in potential danger, would not Tina and her Aurors be invested in stopping Grindelwald?

Newt’s brother, Theseus, is after all also Auror, but for the British Ministry of Magic, and he plays a major role in “Secrets of Dumbledore”.

Enough, Grindelwald is abroad in the third film, so this may possibly technically be outside Tina’s jurisdiction, and Theseus is a more natural fit, but it does not seem like something that would keep Tina away if Newt’s life was at stake. Newt is a talented magic zoologist, but Tina needs to know that she is the superior wizard out of the couple. (Newt is knocked out of Credence so easily at the start of the film that it looks like he was killed for a moment.)

The film could have made a bigger revelation that would have made Tina’s absence make more sense: a pregnancy

Newt and Tina eventually have a child. This would have been the perfect reason for Tina to sit outside of this third film.

Tina appears as a photograph in Newt’s “fantastic” suitcase full of beasts, replacing the photograph that previously showed Leta Lestrange (ZoĆ« Kravitz). Tina’s biggest moment in the new film comes at the very end when she shows up at Jacob’s bakery to meet Newt, and the two attend Jacob’s wedding to Tina’s sister, Queenie (Alison Sudol).

Tina’s absence through the sequel would have made more sense and been more forgiving if the character revealed she was pregnant by the end of the film.

That would at least explain why she did not want to put herself in immediate danger.

We know from the “Harry Potter” story that the two had a child at some point due to the existence of Newt’s grandson, Rolf Scamander, who eventually married Potter’s girlfriend Luna Lovegood.

We also know from extended “Potter” doctrine that Newt has twin great-grandchildren born of Rolf and Luna named Lorcan and Lysander.

Why Waterstone’s Role Probably Reduced: She’s Publicly Opposing Franchise JK Rowling’s View of Gender

Secrets of Dumbledore world premiere

Katherine Waterston was photographed at the film’s world premiere with Eddie Redmayne on March 29. No official stills of her were released in the film.

For fans wondering why Tina’s role is largely reduced in “Secrets of Dumbledore”, some have speculated that Waterston’s role was minimized after the actress publicly opposed the franchisee and “Harry Potter” author JK Rowling’s views on the rights of transgender people.

In June 2020, Waterston shared a Guardian article in an Instagram story, reading: “Trans women pose no threat to cis women, but we pose a threat to them if we make them outcasts.”

According to The Independent, the actor emphasized and circulated a few quotes, including: “Sorry, you can not be a feminist if you are not for everyone’s human rights, especially other women’s human rights.”

When asked in 2021 by outlet why she shared the article, Waterston said it “felt important to communicate” her position given her affiliation with the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise.

“One wondered if they could be grouped into other people’s views by affiliation,” Waterston told the magazine.

The film’s credit notes that the “Secrets of Dumbledore” script is based on an original script by Rowling, which was later reworked and co-written by Rowling and “Harry Potter” film franchise screenwriter Steve Kloves, making it easy to wonder , how much of Waterston’s role may have been cut down and changed. Filming for the film was originally expected to start in March 2020, before being pushed to a launch in September 2020 due to COVID-19.

Waterston appeared at the “Secrets of Dumbledore” premiere and was photographed with Redmayne. None of the movie stars were photographed with Rowling, who was also present.

A representative of Warner Bros., the studio behind the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise, did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment regarding the reason for Waterston’s minimal role in “Secrets of Dumbledore.”
