‘His jokes were dirty, but his heart was pure’: Gilbert Gottfried receives emotional funeral in NYC

Gilbert Gottfried’s widow Dara Kravitz paid tribute to the legendary stand-up comic with a hilarious tribute that would have made her husband proud.

While crying, he remembers his deceased spouse, a few days after he died, 67 years old, of a heart abnormality, the filmmaker, 52, remembers his cheeky sense of humor and at times crude jokes.

‘I loved his heart and soul, his jokes were dirty, but his heart was so pure,’ she recalled with tears during the memorial service at the Riverside Memorial Chapel in New York City on Thursday.

She continued: ‘Our relationship was so special that no matter what I say, it’s not enough.’

Kravitz went on to recall that she met her spouse at a Grammys party held at Tavern on the Green, in 1997, when she was 27 and he was 42.

‘I was there because I was in the music business and he was there to get the free food,’ she laughed, nodding to Gottfried’s reputation for being cheap. ‘Some food fell off my plate and Gilbert picked it up and put it on his plate.’

The mother of two continued: ‘I thought it was a little strange, but I have always been a little attracted to strange people. He looked incredibly sweet and a little lost, and I felt sorry for him, so I was sweet to him, and then he asked for my phone number, and the rest is history. ‘

Kravitz made the audience laugh when she remembered that he ordered a single rice porridge that they could share at the Moonstruck restaurant.

“I thought it was a little strange,” she admitted. “Could he not order two rice porridge?”

“I do not know how to explain the uniqueness of our relationship,” she said. ‘I was young, outgoing and social. Gilbert was shy and introverted. We were opposites, but like two pieces in a puzzle, we fit together perfectly. (For) the next 10 creepy years we dated. He came over every night and watched TV because I actually paid for cable. ‘

After ten years of dating, in 2007 she told their loved ones that he finally convinced Gottfried to get his fears or marriage and fatherhood in order.

“Eventually he took the plunge and trusted me,” Kravitz said of finally tying the knot and welcoming their two children, 14-year-old Lily and 12-year-old Max.

But before he could move into her apartment, she said to him, ‘Please try to get rid of some of your hotel soaps.’

‘They filled a completely different bedroom in his apartment. He asked his sisters if they needed soap, they said, ‘Only big rods,’ she remembered.

“So Gilbert, who was Gilbert, stayed up all night opening the small wraps, running the soaps under water, mashing them together to make large rods,” Kravitz added.

At last she said ‘he gave her sisters a garbage bag filled with custom-made, mashed soaps that she ‘thought was so sweet’ that she ‘could not help but love him.’

Gottfried’s longtime friend Jeff Ross also offered some comic relief to those who mourned Gottfried, by also making fun of the actor’s frugal habits.

Speaking of his friend, the 56-year-old stand-up comedian said Gottfried was ‘survived by his wife and sister, two amazing children and over 12,000 small bottles of shampoo.’

‘What a mitzvah. What a mission in life, what purpose to have in this world. And he was not just plain funny, he was funny, “Ross recalled.

He joked: ‘He was bold and provocative and subversive and so lovable that he could get away with jokes about skulls catching a dead person. Not so funny now, what Gilbert? ‘

Ross also said he welcomed Gottfried’s fearlessness and how he ‘brought light to the world’s darkest secrets.’

“Gilbert took the pain out of our worst tragedies,” he joked, talking about how he “practically began to cancel out culture when he was fired from playing a duck.”

Ross also sweetly played an audio recording of those singing ‘Sunrise, Sunset’ from the hit musical ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ while talking about his friend’s love of music.

While encouraging participants to join in singing the first verse, many began to cry and ‘reach out for their tissues’, according to Page Six.

Alan Zweibel, Sex and the Citys Mario Cantone, Dave Attell and Judy Gold also came to show their respect.

When the deceased star’s family announced the news of his passing, he asked his fans to “be kind enough to laugh as loudly as possible in Gilbert’s honor.”

Schwartz said Gottfried suffered from recurrent ventricular tachycardia, a form of heart failure, due to myotonic dystrophy type II.

Gottfried is perhaps best known as the voice of the animated character Iago in the 1992 film Aladdin. He was also behind the Aflac Insurance duck mascot.
