Phase 1 – Report

Green flag, Almirola wiggles by turn two on the outside. Chase Elliott leads the field into turn three.
Round 40, Elliott leads William Byron by 2 seconds. Elliott cuts right through the lap traffic.
Round 64, Elliott struggles to round Daniel Suarez’s car number 26. William Byron approaches within a car length of the leader. As he does so, Elliott puts the bumper to Suarez and forces his way past.
Chase Elliott wins stage one at Martinsville Speedway! Hamlin puts the bumper to Michael McDowell in an attempt to be the first car 1 lap down. He lifts him pretty well, but McDowell holds the seat and will get his lap back.

Pit Penalties: Bubba Wallace and Brad Keselowski will fall behind as their crews were over the wall too soon. Cody Ware joins him when he was too fast.
Green flag on stage two, Byron limping back on the inner lane. His teammate, Chase Elliott, falls to the inside lane and keeps the lead in the race.
Round 115 leads Chase Elliott with William Byron on the bumper.
1 to go into stage two, Daniel Suarez puts the bumper to the race director. Suarez is unable to manage 2 laps left.

Elliott leads the field to the pits. Byron wins the race to the pit exit.
Pit Penalty: Cole Custer’s crew lost a tire and fell behind.
Green flag on stage three, Elliott limping back on the inner lane. Byron falls down in front of him to lead the field into the first half.
Round 240 leads Byron Elliott with a car length.
Round 249, Daniel Suarez is forced to pit under the green. He stayed out on old tires at the start of this stage. It was an attempt to get 1 of his innings back. When he enters the track again, he runs wide on old tires. When he picks it up, he gets in touch with 2nd place runner Chase Elliott.
Round 280, Joey Logano puts the bumper to Chase Elliott to take the 2nd away. Elliott drops all the way to 5th when he gets caught on the outside court.
Round 290, Kyle Busch is the first car to pit under the green flag.
Round 295, Martin Truex Jr. has a flat right front after his pitstop! No caution, he returns to the pit for the second time.
Pit Penalty: Christropher Bell has been punished when his crew was over the wall prematurely. He is serving a pass-through penalty. Kyle Larson is serving the same penalty after driving too fast on the pitlane.
Round 307, the green flag pit cycle is completed. William Byron rides back to the lead. Joey Logano tracks with 1.4 seconds.

90 left, the caution is out of waste.
Chase Elliott, Kevin Harvick, Kyle Busch and a handful of others walk toward the pitlane. Only 17 cars are on the leading lap.
Green, Byron and Austin Dillon run inches apart in turn one. Dillon pinches him down in turn three, but Byron holds the lead back to the line.
76 left, Kyle Busch forces the problem. He runs outside as they are three wide and Busch passes both cars to 8th place! His tires are only 10 laps newer than the rest of the field.
50 back Byron leads Austin Dillon by 1.5 seconds. Logano is all over Dillon’s bumper.
10 back leads Byron Austin Dillon by 2.7 seconds.

7 to go, Todd Gilliland unlocks and feels the wall, caution is out.
Kyle Busch is the first to pit from 9. Most behind him pit too. Busch restarts as number 13 with fresh tires. We roll into NASCAR overtime for a 2-round shootout.
Green, Byron and Logano run side by side into turn one while Austin Dillon spins the tires behind them. Byron clears him out of the second inning and Logano holds the 2nd from the corner. Byron runs wide out of turn four and Logano closes right back to his bumper.
1 to go, Logano pushes the bumper of Byron in first. It is not enough. He drives it deep into turn three for the last time, but can not get to his bumper.
